Worship at GMVUMC

Welcome! We’ve been waiting for you! What’s more is that God has been waiting for you. We believe God’s grace orders our lives to the point that He has led you to this website to learn what lies in store for you during worship at Gardendale-Mt. Vernon.

We are committed to creating a worship atmosphere that is inviting to all. We are also intentional about enabling life-changing encounters with Jesus Christ through dynamic and multi-sensory worship experiences. For this reason, we offer three varied styles of worship services that enable individuals with various personal styles of worship to find a place where they can best feel free to communicate with God.

The Bible tells us that God inhabits the praise of His people. So take a few moments to browse this page to see which experience may best help you to openly express your worship to God and to sense His presence with us in worship.

Use the navigation below to catch a glimpse of any of our regular Sunday morning worship experiences and see what to expect when you visit with us to worship.
8:30 -- SonRise Celebration 9:45 -- Crossfire
11:00 -- Traditional Worship Just for Children

Our first morning service each week is a casual service of worship in the traditional sanctuary setting. Our worship style during this service is best described as “blended,” as we enjoy offering our God an exciting mixture of music ranging from traditional hymns to southern gospel to modern worship songs and praise choruses. We are led in worship by a praise team comprised of a team of singers, keyboard, and drums. From time to time, we engage in traditional acts of liturgy, but most of our worship is casual in form while dynamic in spirit. We strive, first and foremost, to be led by the Holy Spirit.

Come dressed however you are most comfortable. There are no church robes at this service, and our congregation’s dress ranges from jeans and a shirt to a three-piece suit. We dress to worship, not to impress. As you enter, you will be greeted by friendly fellow worshippers who are genuinely happy to see you here. Ask a greeter for directions, assistance, or any information you need, and they will be happy to assist you.

Crossfire is the place where ancient truth meets a new generation in an exciting multi-sensory worship experience that is most commonly described as “contemporary.” Worship is held in the gymnasium of our Family Ministries Building to further underscore our belief that God meets with His people where they are – not just in a traditional sanctuary. As you enter, you will be greeted by fellow worshippers who are eager to help you find a place and make you feel welcome. After all, this is God’s house and ALL are welcome at His table.

Led by a talented worship band, we offer God our praise in high-energy songs of praise and worship, many of which are current favorites on Christian radio stations around the country. Our lighting design helps worshippers to make their worship a personal encounter with God. And because we believe God speaks to us through all of our senses, we utilize modern technologies to make worship a multi-sensory experience.

Come dressed however you are most comfortable. We dress for worship, not to impress. And people of all ages attend Crossfire.

This worship service is as close to the “bells and smells” traditions as we come at Gardendale-Mt. Vernon. Many who have been around United Methodist churches for years will recognize the elements of our traditional worship service as we regularly join together in reciting our creeds and affirmations of faith, praying Our Lord’s Prayer, and celebrating the time-honored traditional liturgies for the Sacraments of Baptism and Holy Communion. More than just ritual, though, these elements of worship help to unite us as the Body of Christ in a tangible way that is meaningful for those who participate in this worship service as we offer our praise and worship to God together.

In addition to the traditional elements of United Methodist worship, we also enjoy praising God through traditional hymns creatively arranged in energetic medleys. We are led in worship by our talented Chancel Choir who also provides an anthem each week that touches our hearts with Gospel truth and helps us to encounter Christ.

Come dressed however you are most comfortable. Many wear suits and dresses, but many dress more casually. We dress for worship, not to impress. As you enter, you will be greeted by friendly fellow worshippers who are genuinely happy to see you here. Ask a greeter for directions, assistance, or any information you need, and they will be happy to assist you and to make you feel welcome.

Jesus said “Let the little children come to me.” At Gardendale-Mt. Vernon, we believe children are our most fertile ground for ministry, and we strive to provide a safe place for children to worship, learn, and grow. We also recognize that parents also need to have opportunities to worship, learn, and grow as well. So as a ministry to parents, children’s activities and nursery care are available during all of our service times.

Loving and dedicated staff and volunteers staff our nursery to make sure that your tiny one’s needs are met and that they have nurturing care while you are in church or Sunday school.

For older children during the 9:45 hour, Sunday school opportunities are available for children of all ages. At 8:30 and 11, dedicated children’s ministry leaders provide a multimedia worship experience designed for children during which they sing praise with energetic praise songs and hear lessons and messages that are age appropriate and relevant to their lives.

All of our children’s ministry staff and volunteers have undergone background checks and safety training to comply with our church’s “Safe Sanctuary” policy to ensure the highest level of safety and security for our children. Parents can rest in knowing that their children are not only learning about Jesus but also seeing Jesus in the love and actions of our ministry leaders. For more information about our children’s ministries or our Safe Sanctuary policy, see our Children’s Ministry page.
